Lassa Fever Taraba state records 14 deaths.

The Chairperson, Lassa Fever Committee in the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jalingo, Taraba state, Aisha Sani revealed that 14 people have died so far, from the disease, since January 2016.

Sani also disclosed that seven suspected carriers of the disease who were undergoing treatment in the hospital have escaped.

She also said that 21 people, out of the 49 reported cases have been successfully treated and discharged.

Sani said “Seven persons had absconded. We are making frantic efforts to arrest and bring them back to the hospital before they infect others with the disease.

“We have our internal securities here, but the truth is that we need more to secure the Lassa fever unit.”

Abdulsalami Nasidi, Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in a recent interview, also disclosed that 137 cases and 80 deaths have been recorded since the Lassa fever disease was first reported  in December 2015,

Also, news reports have revealed that a university lecturer has claimed that Yoruba people are immune to the Lassa virus which causes Lassa fever.
